FAQ

Questions people ask

Do landlords have to give rent receipts?

Some states require one, most often when rent is paid in cash or by money order; New York, for example, requires a written receipt for any payment other than the tenant’s personal check. Many cities and leases ask for one too.

Everywhere else it is good practice. A receipt is the tenant’s proof of payment and the landlord’s record, and it settles most arguments before they start.

Should I give a receipt for a partial payment?

Yes. Write the amount actually received and fill in the balance remaining, so both sides agree on what is still owed.

If a notice for unpaid rent is already out, accepting part of the rent can affect it in some states. Check your state’s rules before you accept a partial payment then.

Where does the receipt number come from?

From the date received: R-20261001 for October 1, 2026. It sorts in date order and is easy to find later.

If you keep your own sequence, such as one per unit, type it in the receipt number field and it replaces the date number.

Can I print two copies?

Print puts two copies on one sheet with a dashed line between them: one for the tenant, one for your records. Your browser’s print settings decide the paper size and margins.

Copy text gives the same receipt as plain text, ready for an email or a text message.
