Alabama security deposit law

Alabama landlords have 60 days to return a security deposit after you move out and give a forwarding address. The deposit can’t be more than 1 month’s rent.

Additional deposits are allowed for pets, changes to the premises, or increased liability risk.
The deadline
Within 60 days after the tenancy ends and possession is delivered; the tenant must give a written forwarding address. Unclaimed deposits are forfeited after 90 days.
Interest
State law doesn’t require interest on the deposit.
Deductions
The landlord must give you an itemized list of anything kept from the deposit.
If it isn’t returned
Landlord who fails to mail a refund or itemized accounting within 60 days owes double the original deposit.
