Louisiana security deposit law

Louisiana landlords have 30 days to return a security deposit after you move out. State law sets no limit on the amount.

Required
The limit
No statutory limit.
The deadline
The law says one month after the lease ends. If any amount is kept, the itemized statement is due within that month or within 15 days after it (2026 Act 63). This does not apply if the tenant abandons the unit without the required notice.
Interest
State law doesn’t require interest on the deposit.
Deductions
The landlord must give you an itemized list of anything kept from the deposit.
If it isn’t returned
Willful failure: the wrongfully kept amount plus the greater of $300 or twice that amount. Not paying within 30 days of a written demand counts as willful (La. R.S. 9:3252).
