Vermont security deposit law

Vermont landlords have 14 days to return a security deposit after you move out. State law sets no limit on the amount.

The rule

Return deadline

Itemized deductions
Required
The limit
No statutory limit.
The deadline
Within 14 days after the tenant vacates (or the landlord discovers the tenant vacated or abandoned), with an itemized statement; 60 days for seasonal rentals that are not a primary residence.
Interest
No statewide interest requirement; towns may adopt ordinances that require interest.
Deductions
The landlord must give you an itemized list of anything kept from the deposit.
If it isn’t returned
Missing the 14-day deadline forfeits the right to withhold any of the deposit; willful failure makes the landlord liable for double the amount wrongfully withheld plus attorney’s fees and costs.
