Minnesota security deposit law

Minnesota landlords have 21 days to return a security deposit after you move out and give a forwarding address. State law sets no limit on the amount.

Three weeks after the tenancy ends and the landlord receives a mailing address; 5 days if the building is condemned.

1% simple, non-compounded interest a year.
Deductions
The landlord must give you an itemized list of anything kept from the deposit.
If it isn’t returned
A landlord who fails to comply owes the withheld amount plus an equal penalty and interest. Bad-faith retention adds up to $500 in punitive damages (subds. 4, 7).
