North Dakota security deposit law

North Dakota landlords have 30 days to return a security deposit after you move out. The deposit can’t be more than 1 month’s rent (2 months’ rent for a tenant with a felony conviction or a prior judgment for violating a rental agreement).

A separate pet deposit may not exceed the greater of $2,500 or two months’ rent (service/assistance animals excepted).
The deadline
Within 30 days after termination of the lease and delivery of possession, mailed to the last address the tenant furnished.
Interest
Deposit must be held in a federally insured interest-bearing account and accrued interest returned with it; no interest is owed if occupancy lasted less than nine months.
Deductions
The landlord must give you an itemized list of anything kept from the deposit.
If it isn’t returned
Treble damages for any deposit money withheld without reasonable justification.
