Connecticut security deposit law

Connecticut landlords have 21 days to return a security deposit after you move out and give a forwarding address. The deposit can’t be more than 2 months’ rent; 1 month’s rent if the tenant is 62 or older.

The limit
A tenant who turns 62 after paying a larger deposit may request a refund of the amount above 1 month’s rent.
The deadline
Within 21 days after the tenancy ends or 15 days after receiving the tenant’s written forwarding address, whichever is later.
Interest
Deposits must be held in escrow and earn interest at the rate set annually by the Banking Commissioner, paid to the tenant.
Deductions
The landlord must give you an itemized list of anything kept from the deposit.
If it isn’t returned
Landlord who fails to comply is liable for twice the deposit; if the only violation is unpaid interest, the greater of $10 or twice the interest.
